Current Issues in the Interdisciplinary Research Field of Climate Change and Tourism
A Meta-study of articles from 2006 and 2007

The interrelationship between climate change and tourism is a relatively new field of research, with the first publications appearing in the 1980s. Since then, a large number of articles on this 'hot' topic have been published. With this development in mind, the present meta-study aims at exploring the most up-to-date issues in the cross-cutting research field of climate change and tourism by evaluating 38 articles from 2006 and 2007. The content of the articles is structured into four categories.
  • Tourism impacts on climate change.
  • Impacts of climate change on tourism.
  • Trends and possibilities for the adaptation to climate change.
  • Trends and possibilities for the mitigation of the tourism sector's emissions.

Key results are the identification of a missing balance between the analysis of destinations in developed and developing economies, and a lack of detailed studies which could support governments and other tourism stakeholders to make the 'right' decisions regarding the implementation of effective adaptation and mitigation measures.
